Founded in 1907, the Junior League of Boston (JLB) is committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. JLB is part of the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI), a nonprofit organization comprised of 294 Junior Leagues in four countries. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
One of the volunteer initiatives for the JLB, a 1400-member organization, is the Positive Development of Adolescent Girls. JLB's members believe that every adolescent girl should have opportunities to develop her self-esteem and her full potential. A majority of JLB's community projects involve reaching out to adolescent girls through education and one-on-one or group mentoring.
Since 2000, the JLB has been providing office space, conference and meeting space, and financial support to the Girls' Coalition of Greater Boston. For the past four years, a group of JLB volunteers has worked with the Coalition on various projects. In April 2004, the two organizations cosponsored a film festival entitled "To Be Reel: Girls' Worlds."
