About Us   United Way of Massachusetts Bay

The United Way of Massachusetts Bay (UWMB) is focused on achieving positive results for individuals by reducing the obstacles that keep them from reaching their full potential. UWMB forms partnerships across the community to design and execute prevention-based programs within four focused areas: (1) Healthy Child Development, (2) Increasing Youth Opportunities, (3) Affordable Housing, and (4) Sustainable Employment. UWMB’s support of 200 human service organizations across the Greater Boston community provides two million services each year to help individuals and families achieve social, emotional, and economic independence. As one of 1,400 locally governed and independently operated United Ways, UWMB embraces a national movement to create measurable impact in the community--by fundraising, deploying volunteers, and advocating for those whose voices cannot be heard.

The Girls’ Coalition of Greater Boston is generously funded by UWMB’s Today’s Girls…Tomorrow’s Leaders (TGTL) initiative, whose goals are to:

  • Increase resources to support programs that create mentoring relationships and nurturing environments for girls, with a focus on advancing academic achievement, physical health, mental health, and/or leadership development of girls;

  • Increase human-service providers' awareness of girl programming, and to build the capacity of coed youth programs to serve girls more effectively.
The United Way aims to fill the void of too little gender-specific and gender-sensitive programming for girls, to focus on the positive aspects of girls' experiences, and to support and enhance girl programming. The annual Women's Leadership Breakfast has been a major catalyst both in driving unprecedented financial contributions to the TGTL initiative and in raising awareness of girls' needs.

The United Way has provided funding for the Girls’ Coalition since 2000; it is our largest funder.
