Shannon O’Brien
Girl Scouts, Patriots' Trail Council

Shannon O’Brien is the chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts, Patriots’ Trail Council, serving 30,000 girls in the Greater Boston area. She is the former state treasurer and receiver general of Massachusetts--the first woman to hold this statewide constitutional office. As treasurer, she created the Money Conference for Women, which provided financial education seminars to over 8,000 women; improved efficiency of the state lottery and returned an additional hundred million dollars to the cities and towns of Massachusetts. During her term, Shannon overhauled the operations of the state treasury after helping to uncover the theft of millions from the cash management department under the prior administration.

In 2002, Shannon was the first woman in the history of Massachusetts to be nominated by a major party for governor.  She began her political career at age 26 when she won election as state representative, and six years later was elected to the state senate. As a legislator she advocated for more accessible and affordable health care, greater economic opportunity, and was nationally recognized for her strong record to protect children from child abuse.  A graduate of Yale University and Boston University School of Law, she worked as a litigation associate at the Boston law firm of Morrison, Mahoney and Miller. She has worked as a health care executive, taught at Boston University School of Communications, and immediately before joining the Girl Scouts was an investigative and consumer reporter for WB56 Ten O’Clock News.
