Who we are: For sixty-seven years, Girls Incorporated® of Lynn has responded to the changing needs of girls and their communities by providing essential developmental resources and challenging programs to high-risk, low-income girls and their families. Since its founding in 1942, Girls Inc. of Lynn has been widely recognized and respected for the powerful and positive impact it has had on generations of girls and women.
We are a part of a national youth organization, Girls Inc. The organization is dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold. With roots dating to 1864, Girls Inc. has provided vital educational programs to millions of girls, particularly those in high-risk, under served areas. Today, innovative programs help girls confront subtle societal messages about their value and potential, and prepare them to lead successful, independent, and fulfilling lives by receiving support to explore academic, career and personal growth.
Summary of Programs:
School-Age Child Care: This program
is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC)
to provide quality care to up to 143 girls and offers girls ages 6 to 12
(grades 1-6) fun and hands-on enrichment activities during a combination of
formal and informal time.
Middle School Programs: The Middle
School program is designed to empower girls ages 12 to 14 with the knowledge,
skills, and attitudes to make healthy decisions; achieve academic success; and
develop positive relationships with adults and peers. The program is built on four
cornerstones: Academic support, Personal development, Career exploration, and Physical well being. 399
middle school girls were served by our programs last year.
Teen Programs: Girls between the
ages of 14 and 18 participate in our teen programs which address the serious
issues facing teens, including: early sexual activity, alcohol, drugs, tobacco
and racism. These programs offer computer access; one-on-one advising; homework help; job and college
preparation, community involvement and mentoring. 1,084 teens were impacted by
our programs last year both through direct involvement at our site and through
our outreach programs within the community.
Recent Accomplishments:
A New Building, A New
Chapter for Girls in Lynn: This past
June we opened our new facility at 50 High Street in Lynn which now enables us
to welcome all our members to one building where girls benefit from expanded
program space, new technology labs and a gymnasium to offer sports and exercise
programming. With the very generous support of many, we have reached the $9.5
million mark of our $11 million building campaign. We are most appreciative and
welcome additional support to help us raise the final $1.5m in order to receive
the $850,000 Kresge Foundation Challenge funding.
